We leave Cusco early in the morning in our specialized overland vehicle.
We will go through interesting valleys between the Andes and picturesque
peasant communities. Approximately at mid-morning we visit Paucartambo,
a picturesque Spanish colonial town, and then the Acjanacu pass at
3850-m. a. s. l. We continue our bus trip through the Cloud Forest, rich
in endemic species as the Cock of the Rock, the Spectacled Bear,
Orchids, Tree Ferns (one of the oldest living plants), mosses and
lichens. Overnight in our comfortable platform.
2ND DAY:
Early wake up to observe the fascinating mating ritual dance of the Cock
of the Rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru's national bird, whit its vibrant
reddish orange feathers. After breakfast we continue our bus ride
through the high forest eventually arriving to Pilcopata town (*).
Following we arrive to Port of Atalaya (700 m.a.s.l) by the riverbanks
of Alto Madre de Dios River in order to board our motorized boat.
Once all the appropriate equipment is loaded in the boat,
we start going down stream watching the great diversity of bird species,
such as herons, vultures, cormorants. We stop in a small lake to observe
caimans, hoatzins (pre-historic bird) and then arrive to our Private
Reserve of Erika Lodge to spend the night.
The great diversity of wildlife around
the lodge is due to the wide altitude range of this beautiful site.
Immediately after arrival we will walk around the trails and our guide
will explain us about insects, medicinal plants, trees, reptiles,
mammals. Short night walk.
(*) Here in Pilcopata town we will make all the final settings for a 3
hour rafting trip (class II and class III) down the Kosñipata and Alto
Madre de Dios river where we will have the opportunity to enjoy the
fantastic view and a refreshing dip. Continuing down to our lodge.
3RD DAY:
After breakfast, we will navigate for 10 minutes towards the Collpa, a
clay wall by the riverbank where different species of parrots as the
Blue Headed Parrot, the White Eyed Parrakeet and probably the Military
Macaw ,among others, come down every morning for a lick of mineral to
help their digestion. After this fascinating show we continue in our
